The Rev. Ian Watson's Official Blog.
Second Chance opened its doors for the first time on 2nd November 1998 with the aim of providing Christian outreach to the village and surrounding areas through a "good-as-new" shop.
In July 2006, after some deliberation, we moved to our new shop and are delighted to serve the community from these brand new, exceptional premises.
Second Chance is a non-profit making outreach which allows all profits to be used to help those in need in our own community as well as those further afield. Second Chance is operated by a team of volunteers who all have an active connection with the Church and relies on donations of clothing and small items of bric-a-brac to continue its outreach.
On Sunday 26th October the church and community celebrated 10 years of the Second Chance shop with a special service of thanksgiving to God.  During the service Mary Whiteford, chair of the management committee, gave a brief account of the Second Chance story.  Seeing the success of the annual Boys' Brigade jumble sale, Mary and Pat Reid got a vision for a good-as-new shop in the heart of the village to help families struggling to meet ends meet.  Initially situated in rented accommodation, Second Chance now owns it's own purpose-built premises strategically located half way up Thornton Road.

Mary emphasised that the purpose of the shop is not to raise funds for the church but to be a Christian witness to our village.  Over the past ten years £35,000 has been donated to various charities.  One of the most successful ventures has been giving book tokens to local students.

Second Chance could not operate without the help of an army of volunteers who give up so much of their time and have to deal with the unexpected.  On one occasion a mini-bus full of Japanese tourists appeared.  On another a young lad with an axe stormed in.

Second Chance provides not only clothes, toys and books but also a sympathetic ear to customers who may be lonely and troubled.  So to everyone who is involved, whether in the front shop or working away quietly in the background, we offer our sincere gratitude.  And we praise Almighty God for the opportunity to serve the people of our village in his name.
